There have been many reports of people contracting Voice Strain from the use of Speech Recognition, both discrete AND continuous speech. Depending on your predisposition and usage of the SR system, Voice Strain can happen as quickly as within a month of use, or it may never happen at all. A study by Kambeyand, Singer and Cronk suggests that people with a history of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) are more likely to suffer Voice Strain from using SR systems than people with no previous history of RSI. Also, programming being the intense activity that it is, it may lead to more Voice Strain than dictation for word processing.
