Shared

Much of what I do is integrating free/open/shared software into my workplace. Some of the best software out there is shared and free. I think this sphere has had more impact on me than anything else. Maybe the impact is too strong. Maybe I have erroneously believed that the flourishing of ideas, changing paradigms, sharing of knowledge, zany honest personalities could be applied to the rest of the world. I keep thinking we can get to Mars this way.

I can't understand the struggle to grow the company until it forms into a rigid structure with all participants jostling for position hoping that nothing else comes along better outside and squelching it if it does or else sucking it up.

There is no security in position unless...

Unless what?

At the same time I gripe about the borders between companies, I indelibly mark the borders of my own.

It's a funny link between privacy and openness, copyright and sharing, poor artist and rich connoisseur. It's funny how opposites can support one another. Maybe hybrid SUVs are the future. Who knows? :)
