CMMI

Starting tomorrow, I'll be in a CMMI training class. It's a highlevel approach for process improvement. It's so highlevel that I think some would say that it is off the map, into the ether and nowhere. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but after reading some of the book, it seems worthwhile to me.

One of the M's in CMMI is for "maturity". There are 5 levels of process maturity and 22 process areas. I chuckled to myself while reading the description of maturity level number 1. This maturity level is characterized by instability, chaos, ad hocness and overcommitment. The success at this level depends on individual heroics and competence. This isn't to say that this level can't be successful.

I think I thrive in maturity level number one, although I can't be a rock-n-roller forever. Or can I???

But maybe the whole world view of CMMI is off. CMMI breaks up the universe into four parts - tools, people, products and processes. Processes are central as people come and go, tools support and products are produced.

I dunno. I'm sure I'll learn something.
