Saturn Through A Telescope For First Time

Buying time for a late night Saturn viewing, watched "Smokey And The Bandit". Or was it that we happened to be up late because we watched "Smokey And The Bandit"? Anyhow, around 12:30am, Saturn was over the horizon.

So much fun to see.

I like that I've been building little rocket engines, viewing Jupiter and now Saturn and learning to fly r/c planes.

I knew I'd be tired today, but I didn't care. I told Richard, "This is part of my job. I need to do this." So much has to do with imagination and wonder. It's funny how looking through a lens and fiddling with knobs to get a quick smallish hard-to-focus view is more exciting and real than seeing the image you see here.

There's something about standing back and seeing the planet as a tiny dot in the sky then peering at it thru the telescope and it's just there... Saturn. The thought came to me, "Another planet - wow... I'm looking at another planet." There's this open sensation with that - like space is more spacey. The planet grows ancient in it's own history. I can't explain it.... Saturn is a beautiful planet.

My neighbor just got the new iphone. Being a voice user, I was very skeptical that it would work. Richard handed it to me and asked me to ask it a question. I asked it a couple things and was very surprised that it understood me. With the voice software I use, I had to train it. This thing understood my voice out of the box. I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but the voice recognition is impressive I have to say.

Now - if her answers are any count.... that's another question. I'll have to play with it some more to form an opinion on the actual use (other than novelty). She does know how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

It is obvious that my neighbor is in love with his iphone. My daughter is in love with her ipod. I'm telling you, Apple knows how to make people love their products... not just like, appreciate, understand... but love. Saying anything negative about Apple to an iphoner is touchy ground... because it's love.

This flight was so much fun. It's much different making your own little engine. I have been experimenting for a couple months with straws, tiny tubes etc. I've had misfires, duds, spewings, lame-o-s and huge booms. I have even had a visit from the police.

The other morning I woke up at 3:30am. I could see the inside of the engine burning, exhaust channeling through the nozzle... I saw it - surface area... jet stream... flow...

What a wonderful thing.

I love the mistakes... the correction... the next trial... the wondering... the pondering... try again... yes!... no!... how about this? hmmmm... yes! no! Do it again!

I took Richard to the medical center yesterday. He's a guinea pig for a new defibrillator/pacemaker. Basically, they offloaded information from him.

After that, Richard took me to a shop in Pearland. His buddy had an extra drill press.... now I have a drill press :-) Robert, if you have your ears on, I think I can get away with wood instead of metal and use a drill press and dowels to do what I need for building model rocket engines.

Last night Kim and I went to church and listened to a friend of mine talk about local farming and how that ties into Christianity.

Last night, finally, I slept well.

Kaley Dressed Up For Science Fair

Kaley had talked about getting a dress. I didn't know why. She tried it on for me and I asked, "Is this your Hermione Granger outfit?" She said, "No, daddy. This is for the science fair tomorrow." Happiness flooded over me as I realized how important this was for her, "You mean you wanted a dress for the fair?" I hollered like some goofy dad, "If we go on to the next level... I PROMISE I will bump it up a notch. Paw should see. He's got to help. He'd be so proud!" I hollered at Kim, "She's doing this with style! Style is important! It matters!" Kim said, "I picked out the sweater."

Kaley is worried she's going to be over-dressed (something she didn't worry about when we went to the theater). She knows it's a tad over and is a bit worried what the other kids are going to think of her dressed up.

She's worried about being too good is what she's worried about. Being too good is not cool, but she can't help it - that's Kaley.

She's done so well in school this year. She's just such a good kid. She inspires me.

PS: I had told her earlier in the week that giving a B effort was fine - that all As are overrated. I told her that mediocrity was so much more simple and enjoyable. I don't think I got through to her.

PPS: She told me this morning, "Daddy, if we go to the Houston fair, I don't think we'll be over-achievers if we put some more effort into it."

Stud finders give weird readings thru tile. Stud finders become schizophrenic when hovering over tile. I don't trust stud finders. I like using an ice pick. I know you like your stud finder. I should have used your stud finder because it really works. I don't like your stud finder.

The bar is not crooked. The tile is.

Shower tile is very NON-porous. Shower tile is very hard to drill thru. Yes, with a hammer drill... okay, not your hammer drill, the Milwaukee. No wait, you don't need a hammer drill. You have a special bit for your cordless. I know. You are a handyman. You would have done this job in 34 minutes. Tops!

Studs are never 16" apart. No, I know, yours are. You were smart and got the right house with the studs on 16" centers. Things are not difficult for you are they? Things fit. They work. You know how to choose. How difficult can things be? If not 16"... you know because you have it on a spreadsheet and you laugh at the mortals who do not see through the skin of their walls. Mere men!

Your drill bit sinks in NON-porous tiles like a pencil in hot butter. Your bit doesn't dance on the surface of the tile. It doesn't slide off in a trail of marring. It sinks straight where you marked it. That's because you apply perfect orthogonal pressure to your drill. This is awesome, I just wrote in the last post (January 12, 2012) :

The previous time, Io was not visible. This time it was close to Jupiter and quickly disappeared as it orbited in front of Jupiter.

Then I just read:

On January 7, 1610, Galileo Galilei observed what he believed were three stars near Jupiter, including what turned out to be Ganymede, Callisto, and one body that turned out to be the combined light from Io and Europa; the next night he noticed that they had moved. On January 13, he saw all four at once for the first time, but had seen each of the moons before this date at least once.

I just thought it was cool that he saw the fourth moon about the same time of year we did when we "discovered it"--- January 11, 2012... what 402 years later.

It was funny too because I had told Richard that I thought the moons might have been stars. When the fourth appeared I knew it was a moon... but was still unsure of the others as they looked so far away from Jupiter.

Oh wait! And actually January 7th was the night of the Texan's game when we saw them for the first time... exactly coinciding with Galileo.

That's about how Jupiter and its four biggest moons look thru Richard's telescope.

The previous time, Io was not visible. This time it was close to Jupiter and quickly disappeared as it orbited in front of Jupiter.

It was really cool. Also looked at the nebula in Orion's sword. Awesome stuff.

PS: the Galilean moons were discovered in 1610.

PPS: The moon called Ganymede is an tiny bit larger than Mercury.

First Engine

I found out that "bentonite" clay is a health supplement. I actually found it across from HEB. The lady there uses it for "detoxification". I used it for packing.

With make-shift tools I was able to fire this little guy. I had it strapped so it wouldn't move. It was really fun to watch. It kept hissing and hissing with a steady stream of fire exiting the nozzle. I didn't pack much but got about 5-6 seconds. It was seriously cool.

I was just a little happy :-)

1958 NASA Paper And Our Science Fair Project

I thought this a neat document while researching rocket motors. I happened to read the following couple pages and found on this page: in regards to solar cells... this quote:

Therefore one improvement would be to reduce the reflectivity of the cell; another would be to make the cells thinner. Another possibility might be to actually concentrate solar energy through a lightweight plastic lens. It would be desirable to develop cells for high-temperature operation. Temperature control problems for solar cells have been investigated in the U.S.S.R. for satellite applications.

I guess we are 2011-1958=53 years late on this "possibility" ;-) Looks like the Russians were already onto our temperature control issue. Dude... I was born in the wrong time period! I should have been in either the space race or the hippie revolution... or both! I had to be in the "internet" era. Boring!

PS: I like how they said "Another possibility might be to ACTUALLY concentrate solar energy..." - as if it were some crazy idea.

My mother-in-law, who recently moved here, broke her femur while riding a bicycle - actually it was the falling off part that broke her femur. Visited her at Saint John's hospital today.

Watched second to last episode of Monk tonight. Tomorrow is Kaley's 13th birthday. We will watch the show's finale on her birthday.

Thought the Pittsburgh .vs. Denver game was superb. It was hard fought on both sides. It was probably the best football game of the season. I didn't really choose a team; I just enjoyed the game.

This has been a great weekend. The Texans won. Saw Jupiter (Europa, Io, Gannymede(?) were perfectly visible too) in Richard's telescope. Laughed at Larry's until the owls came out. Made awesome tacos. Beat several Angry Bird levels. Played catch with Kovi. Met the couple that Lynn lives with. Saw that great game. Great Monk episode. Think I may have an R/C plane... check ebay later. I have been making people laugh too. Friend from highschool wants to go to Big Bend. We were surprised to find out that Lynn should be walking relatively soon.

First Flight

This is my first R/C flight day (night). If you watch the whole clip the plane zooms over the camera. The crash at the end didn't hurt it.

PS: Daddy, if you read this, you can definitely do this without a runway. I was able to toss the plane then grab the control. Landing in grass is totally fine. This is a really inexpensive plane.

Richard wrecked his plane into a transformer today. It was a spectacular collision!

I woke up this morning dreaming about a two-stage rocket. I want to build a R/C controlled ignitor for second stage. I think I have a good concoction and method for building the ignitor... now to think about how to R/C control it.

I met a guy on the plane to Ross Lake. He is the principal engineer for Beagle Bone. He watched me draw. I watched him write driver code.

I love the little motors and servos on these model planes.

I was told I was correct about something from a guru from Nokia about a C++ destructor.

I'm a geek. I like beer too.

NASA Car Broken Down

I made this up to entertain myself this morning...

A bunch of NASA guys are on a road trip and break down. The engineer immediately hops out, pops the hood and tries to fix it. The IT guy complains that this would not have happened had the key to the car been secure - he tells everybody to move away from the car as it could blow up at any second. A Perl programmer exclaims, "I can get this car running with ONE line!" Nobody listens to the Perl programmer because he squeaks when he talks. The C++ programmer scratches his head and says in a long low mysterious voice, "Is BrokenDown a noun or a verb? Should it be BreakingDown? What do we mean by Break and Broken? Are these attributes of some entity?" The mathematician hops out and begins walking for help all the while daydreaming of perfect cars, pothole-free roads, triangular trees and marshmallow clouds. The secretary searches the car for paper. The manager fears he will lose shotgun and remains seated and buckled in. The entrepreneur whispers to the engineer, "Hey, if you get this car running, I'll give you $20." He then goes to the manager and says, "I can get this car running for $30." The rocket scientist surmises that they are out of gas and begins mixing odd things like water, grass, dirt and flowers to develop fuel. The astronaut keeps turning the key madly pressing the accelerator, screaming, "Start, you bastard!" The mission specialist commences to jumping jacks and Yoga. The cosmonaut jumps in the trunk, locks himself in and hollers, "All zee vodka eez mine!", and silently murmurs to himself, "Eez good to be back in zee womb." The Co-op tries phone gestures on the rearview mirror. The trainer takes out the car manual and begins corrections. The C programmer begins dismantling the entire car starting at the back bumper. The night worker woofs a donut and steals the hubcaps. The process guy exclaims, "All this could have been prevented".
