Went to Fishing Tackle Unlimited and priced rods, tried to find proper sinking line (and couldn't), didn't know what reel to choose. After nobody asking to help me, I wrote the prices down and drove to Bass Pro. Normally, I don't want too much help, but this time it didn't feel right. It all felt disconnected... like I was at EPO (electronics parts outlet) trying to find little pieces and parts with no solid idea what worked with what the best. I know I could search online, but I've found that a good technical "sales guy" that knows his stuff is way better. He can cut to the chase... and narrow you in on what will work.
At Bass Pro, I was happily surprised that they had a better model TFO for less money. They also had a more pricewise graduated reel selection. The flyshop at BassPro has a dedicated attendant or two that is always eager - at first I thought over eager - to help.
After this large expense, I think I would have felt empty had I just pulled stuff off the shelf and stuck it together... taken it to the counter and had somebody that doesn't fish just ring it up.
When I got the rod at Bass Pro, I told the guy, "Man, I hate spending money like this." The guy at Bass Pro told me, "I know this hurts, but what you just got is for a lifetime. It's a good rod and reel." I dunno, it is still painful... Hope I enjoy the number seven. Can't wait until I feel the reel action... the micro clicks... the closed housing... balance... the glint of green in the rod... oh yeah... starting to feel better :-)
