I stayed at a b-n-b on Waikiki Beach last week. I surfed about three session per day, from sunrise to sunset, for 7 straight days. Yes! After renting a board in Cocoa Beach on the AA2 trip, I realized that a rental was a lot more simple and fine. I rented a board at "Quality Surfboards". I got a Donald Takayama "In The Pink" board. It was a surftech version (yuck), but good enough. I'll rent from them again! I mostly surfed a break called "Pops". The surf was a solid head high and what I'd describe as the Platonic Projection, The Fulfillment, of the surf here. It's heaven. The water is beautiful. The surf report to my family was Blue Hawaiian Glass Walls.
I have no pictures because of going deviceless (no phone, no tablet, no camera, no clickety-click). Midweek, I found a public library in walking distance. That served as my connection home. It's funny that landlines are absent, so the only alternative, if you don't have a cellphone, is the public library. From my perspective, watching people on the beach with their cellphones, is like watching a pandemic.
People wondered how I could survive in Hawaii without a cellphone. For the plane flight, all you need is a drivers license and a confirmation number. That gets you there. That's it. For the car rental, all you need is your license. To get around, I printed a couple maps off of google maps and brought a map of Oahu. I studied the maps while on the plane flight. Once you get the feel for the place, you realize that there are two or three main roads (H1,H2 and Kamehamena (sp?)). Road signs still work. I found really good food too! I hiked to a waterfall after seeing signs while driving around Oahu. It's fun without a cellphone!
I surfed at Surfside yesterday and am headed to Galveston in a bit. It's good in Hawaii and it's good here. Surfing Texas translates really well to surfing in Hawaii.
May the vacation/staycation continue! Go Astros! Go Texans!
