San Saba River

After Johnny's, I headed on. After Mason, before Brady, along 87, I crossed a bridge and saw some people swimming (actually thought I saw a topless girl)... and then I just about slammed on the brakes again...

Went under the bridge. Lied down on the limestone bank. Watched the swallows. Listened to the thump thump of the cars as they pass over the divides on the bridge. Closed my eyes. Could see the vanishing point. The thump thump has the same frequency, just trails off in the distance. The car steadily grows smaller as it retreats into infinity. The echo gently fades, but with the same beat.

Stood up. Started walking along the bank. I was in the middle of nowhere, but I wanted to be more nowhere. As the infrequent sound of automobiles began to fade, my heart jumped and I began to walk faster. Nothing but river. No signals. My shoes sank at one point. Ended up barefooted.

Watched a turtle hide himself from me. Watched buzzards fly. Waded out to a boulder, sat for a while. Watched fish swim.

And there is where I get my refill.
