113838I think the music got so bad in the 1980s that die hard fans started doubting his 1960s music.
It actually makes you wonder if finding his way, making a way ... but there was never really a way. No direction home.
After watching the movie, I woke up thinking about it. He seemed caged. Like there were always four walls around him. it seems like he did everything he could in all honesty to escape. He turned on his own fans a couple times. he recorded with different artists. Maintained spontaneity during the recording productions.
But it is like it just quit clicking to the point where his most admiring fans wondered if it was all a gimmick. Not an intentioned gimmick, but as a spokesman, maybe always out of tune with the message. like even his non-gimmickry was gimmericky.
I think he would argue that he was never a spokesman. He would
probably say he was an entertainer.
I said all that pretty fast in voice-recognition. Don't know if I agree with what I said.
For some reason it all leaves me hoping that he will "return to form" as they kept on saying. We want people to voice the things that we have inside that we are unsure of how to get out.
Somehow artists do that. I might disagree with myself later, but Kurt Cobain, as screwed up as he was, somebody I would not want my kids to emulate, and neither would he; somebody who may have been dull-witted, superficial or whatever, somebody who I don't understand and even said, "I'd rather you hate me for who I am than love me for what I am not", which may not even be an original quote... somebody who I can't even understand the words he is saying... Who I have never bought an album from... Who was a heroin addict, who killed himself and I don't think was well respected among his friends... for some reason I connect with him.
In fact, while the documentary showing how Bob Dylan was affected by the 1980s scene, I kept hearing the first guitar riff on "Smell's Like Teen Spirit".
But Bob Dylan still makes music. To me it takes a lot of nerve to try and fail (and succeed to) after hitting such a peak like he did in the 1960s.
Actually, I've heard some say that
his music in the 1970s was better.
Collectively, in some sense, we are responsible for the rise and fall of these guys who we find resonance with, who give us a voice. We do pay them with adulation, money etc.
I am guessing that the initial resonance between entertainer and audience is where the exhilaration is. After this, I wonder if expectation suffocates.
With somebody like van Gogh, there is no meeting between the artists work and admirers. in many cases, like Van Gogh's, the artist suffocates himself, largely I would guess because of disconnection.
Then there are those like Dr. DeBakey who pioneered heart surgery, taught a couple thousand surgeons, who worked until a ripe old age... Dr. DeBakey is in a whole different class though isn't he?
I am just rambling on now. Using voice recognition I can just talk... Blah blah blah1

Wow. It is a shame to see someone go downhill. I can't really comment on your whole post tight now, but I read it.
I don't think he went downhill, really. It is hard to explain. And anyhow, I don't know what I'm talking about.
Well, I don't know ANYTHING about Dylan, but did you ever hear about Bill, the guy across the street from us when we lived on Boggy Ridge, being Dr. Debakey's first successful heart transplant patient? He was like, famous -- ha! No, Dr. Debakey called him every year to see how he was doing. Dr. Debakey was a beautiful man, I understood.
Keep all your thoughts comin' Keith. I love reading your blog!
Mom Hopkins (okay, LYNN)
I do remember Bill. I didn't know that he was one of Dr. DeBakey's first patients. That is really neat.
It is good to know that you read "the blog". This is a great outlet for me. It makes it really worthwhile knowing that you, and others, enjoy it.
Did you know that Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers) is Bob Dylan's son? I really like that "One Headlight" song.
Hey, come on try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle
But me & Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
