Consider resale value of your house. Not sure a white roof would be a selling point; especially, once the mold starts on it.

Dried palm leaves wrapped with hemp rope is cost efficient.
I'm thinking I need an umbrella on top of my house. During the hot summer, I press this button and bzzzzzzz this huge beach umbrella comes out.Hey. Maybe I can just forget the roof and go with the umbrella. Rain or sun, I can use the umbrella.I guess I can just keep the umbrella open all the time.... which puts me back to just having a roof.I just wish I was lucky enough to have a couple big trees shading the house.
Or we could move to Austin.....

The slate people never returned our calls. Met with Bay Area Roofers dude today. They sell Owens Corning shingles - hence the pink panther.
