Flat

I recently came to this realization that everything I was painting was flat. It began after showing Kovi a drawing of a lime. He said, "Acorn!" I challenged myself to a charcoal drawing (no green!) that would convince Kovi.

Looking in this room full of drawings, all the passion out the door, all the time, places I've been, stories, comments... that charcoal lime (along with the subsequent orange and tangerine) hold their own. Most everything else seems flattened on the surface of the paper. This is actually a school that the modern school poopoo-ed, and maybe correctly so for that time.

I got a 7-Up today. I saw the logo, bubbles, exciting lines, green & yellow... all pasted on the can, a decal. And then everything began looking like decals. Cut-n-paste decals everywhere. The richness of depth is absent.

I really hoped all along that I'd discover something new, but doing that is actually *so old*. I could go in circles on that.

What excited me today was the possibility of creating a painting that starkly contrasted with the decaled logo-ed universe we see each day.

And I'm not saying modern art stinks or anything. I just really like that lime and pretty much everything else that I've done looks plastered and ready for the attic.

Interesting...I saw a guy today doing a vehicle wrap on a Geico insurance vehicle. It looked so much easier that painting, airbrushing and all that...hmmm. The gecko was 3D and he did the whole car in about an hour.

What's a "vehicle wrap"? Sounds like a huge decal.

Yeh sorry... it's a huge decal that's already printed out. You just gotta stretch it and make it wrap around the body lines without creases and bubbles...but not much artistic creativity.

The kind of depth I'm talking about is more than perspective.

It's a richness between warmth and coolness... and other stuff... which I feel stupid talking about because it sounds goofy.

Oh... you commented while I was commenting so the previous comment wasn't a response to your last comment..

Why don't I just come over and have a beer?
